Immediate release

The Mexican-born singer-songwriter keeps busy all summer,
getting ready for album launch in the fall

July 24, 2019Mamselle Ruiz loves Montreal. So much that when came the time to write a song about her new home, inspiration came in a mere 10 minutes: «Kaléidoscope sur ton visage à mille couleurs et tu sais bien t’es mon amour.» (Kaleidoscope on your multicolour face, you know very well you are my love). Mamselle, who arrived in Québec in 2010 thanks to a love story and an engagement with Cirque du Soleil, describes her home on a Mozambique rhythm (a Cuban musical genre):  museums, children playing, festivals, terraces… She explains:  ‘This colorful city is so welcoming, so inspiring, I am free to blossom here, I feel welcome’. The song was voted ‘Coup de coeur du jury’ in the Montréal Muse 2017 song contest.  Put together by Vision Diversité, the Montréal Muse contest aims to give total creative freedom to artists inspired by the city.

Mamselle Ruiz combines cultural influences of her new home to those of her native country, sharing Latin rhythms, Latin American customs and Mexican tales to her new home and bringing Québec artistic trends to Latin America.

In 2007, Mamselle met Montrealer Simon Rioux while on a Cirque du Soleil tour in Mexico and they later visited Québec, Ontario and the Canadian Great North. In 2009, Cirque du Soleil hired Mamselle Ruiz for the ‘Les Chemins invisibles’ show. She went back to le Cirque in 2010 and moved to La Belle Province. In 2012, she opened for the great Lila Downs at Québec City’s Palais Montcalm. Mamselle won several awards at Vue sur la relève and was awarded the Prix Résidence at Place des Arts, as part of Vision Diversité’s MUZ. She was chosen Révélation Radio-Canada-World Music 2013-2014. In 2015, she represented Québec in Mexico during the Semaine de la francophonie. Later that year, she opened for French singer Michel Jonasz in France and went back to le Cirque du Soleil, playing Dame Blanche, the main role, for a series of concerts in Andorra. In 2016 and 2017, she toured Québec again, this time with Bia. In 2018, she received an ADISQ nomination and opened the Elvis Crespo Montreal concert.

Mamselle Ruiz – Biography
(Before arriving in Québec)

At the age of five, Mamselle was singing already as a soloist in the ecclesiastical choir. After three years of opera training (Escuela Libre de Música De México, DF), she specialized in jazz at the Escuela Superior de Música de México, in DF. She then developed the technique of “Speech Level Singing” with Alejandro Campero for two years. Followed by various master classes with several important acclaimed personalities, such as Bobby McFerrin and Dean Bowman (Screaming Headless Torsos).

Her extraordinary talent led her to sing in well-known places such as El Palacio de Bellas Artes, El Auditorio Nacional Mexico City, El Teatro de la Danza and El CNA with famous artists such as Alejandro Markovich (Caifanes), Ramsés Luna (OMS), Daniel Aspuru and Andy Gangadeen (Massive Atack).

Mamselle settled in Canada in 2010, thanks to a contract with Cirque du Soleil (Les Chemins invisibles). In 2012, she opened the show for the acclaimed singer Lila Downs (Film Frida) at the Palais Montcalm in Quebec City. Mamselle was awarded several prizes at Vue sur la relève and she received the Résidence à la place des arts in the framework Vitrine du Grand rendez-vous des musiques locales métissées of Vision Diversité. In 2013 she received the nomination Revelation Radio Canada in World Music 2013-2014. In 2015, she represented Quebec in Mexico, during the “La semaine de la francophonie”, as the opening act for Michel Jonasz (the very popular singer from France), as well as returned back to the Cirque du Soleil to work on a series in Andorra, Europe.

Mamselle has toured Canada and Mexico, with more than 350 shows, to major festivals like the Montreal International Jazz Festival. She gave 85 shows in 2015 and is now preparing a new album for 2016-2017.

In addition to her qualities as a singer, the young creative talent is interested in different spheres of performing arts. Theater, tribal dance, Latin danse and various circus disciplines are added to her experience. All these qualities and abilities distinguish and heighten Mamselle’s presence on stage.
